Weekend Wrap-Up
The weekend was rather pedestrian in terms of upsets, outside of the beat down in Eugene most wouldn’t say Oregon winning was an upset but in the manner they did. The two games to focus on for the mid majors were Central traveling to BC, and Houston and Southern Miss. The Cougars and Eagles played what could be considered the game of the week with over 1,300 yards in total offense and Houston scoring on a 46 yard TD pass with only .21 seconds to go, the TD pass was Case Keenum’s fifth to go along with 559 yards passing. Told ya they were the top two offenses in the conference.
The big BCS news is that Southern Cal falling out of contention removes one team that TCU needs to jump to make the BCS title game, and there is still a good chance UF, Bama, Iowa, and Cincinnati could all go down. Now to me it doesn’t matter what position you take on non AQ schools how great would it be to see TCU v. Texas in the title game the ultimate big brother little brother match up. Think Mack Brown came after Jerry Hughes or Andy Dalton, or how long do you think Colt McCoy considered going to Ft. Worth. In this season of mediocrity there isn’t a better season for this opportunity. Wrap-Up Time.
#6 TCU 41 UNLV 0
The common theme for the Frogs and Bronco’s this week, Style Points everyone talks that these two teams need to win big and they combined to win 86-7. TCU is known for their lock down defense and it has been better than advertised, however the offense is what is putting them over the top this season Saturday was the third straight game in which they put up at least 38. In his first season as the “Guy” at QB Andy Dalton has taken full advantage throwing for over 1600 yards and 14 TD’s. The offense as a whole put up over half a thousand in total yards with 578. The win gives TCU a 54-6 home record since ’99 and is currently on a 12 game winning streak, this week they take the longest conference road trip to San Diego to play the Aztecs.
#7 Boise State 45 SJSU 7
The Bronco’s have won their last two games by a combined 99-16, guess Chris Peterson got the style point’s memo after their nail bitter victory at Tulsa. Not that the game was in doubt going into the second half but just in case BSU ran off 35 unanswered. Kellen Moore led the way with 278 yards passing, surprisingly the Bronco’s were held under their season average of 190 yards rushing only gaining 140. BSU takes another long roady this time to Ralston, LA to play the Bulldogs and hope to gain some more national attention as they play Friday night on national TV.
#14 Utah 22 Wyoming 10
The Utes have confused this season with the NCAA basketball tournament survive and advance. Yes they have only lost once this season but are not coming away with the so called needed style points that the two teams above them have done. The Ducks winning out doesn’t only help Boise it also helps Utah @Eugene is their only loss the past two seasons. Terence Cain has done more than an admiral job replacing Bryan Johnson at QB and will take his 1600 yards and 11 TD’s to Ft. Worth for game of the year the sequel in two weeks, if the Utes can avoid the winless Lobos.
#15 Houston 50 Southern Miss 43
As mentioned above, the most exciting game of the week took place in Houston and was a complete offensive shoot out. If you thought the 578 yards put up by up state TCU was PS3 like then Case Keenum and his offense would like you to see their 750 yards of total offense. Keenum has 3293 yards and 25 TD’s in 8 games, yes I know he plays in C-USA but OSU, TTU, and MSU had no answers either so why cant Case get some Heisman love, don’t let Andre Ware and David Klingler effect the season he is having. UH has two road games coming up starting with what should be their toughest test left @Tulsa this Saturday. It’s going to be very interesting to see where the Cougars end up at the end of the season.
NR Central Michigan 10 Boston College 31
Central might have taken themselves off the watch list. It was unlikely that CMU was going to get any love that wouldn’t result in them playing in the inaugural Little C’s bowl. But another win vs. a BCS school would have put them in the up and coming talk for next season for sure. The main reason the Chips have had so much success the past few seasons is mainly due to Dan LeFevour and he just didn’t have it on Saturday. Throwing for only 152 yards no TD’s and an interception and was unable to hurt the Eagles on the ground rushing for only 26 yards and as lowly as that is, it lead the team. Central scored first with a second quarter field goal but wouldn’t score again till the final minute of the 4th. The loss is a downer for the program but, with Michigan losing on Saturday as well it looks even more likely that the Chips will get their chance to be king of the state for the 09-10 season, and don’t underestimate what that would mean for the program.
