Weekend Preview

This weekend doesn’t have any top 20 matchups involving two mid major programs, but it does have unranked and un- respected Central Michigan taking on Boston College in Chestnut Hill of course. Most of the other games are conference games meaning they won’t get any attention until Utah goes to Ft Worth in a couple weeks. So I’ll take over and do some light shedding till then.

#6 TCU Horned Frogs vs. UNLV Runnin Rebels
Field Cred-W’s @UVA, @Clemson (beat Miami), @BYU (beat Oklahoma)
The Frogs back at home after the trip to the Mountain welcome in the Rebels who still aren’t making progress and come in with a 3-5 record and are giving up almost 33 points a game and the Frogs have put 30 plus in back to back games. TCU has won 5 straight over Vegas and is 6-1 since joining the Mnt. West. Don’t forget the style points Frogs, sorry Reb’s

#7 Boise St. Broncos vs. San Jose St. Spartans
Field Cred-W’s against #16 Oregon (Beat Utah and Cal) @Fresno St., @Tulsa
The Bronco’s got jumped in the BS standings by TCU and now are left to hope the Ducks, Dogs, and Golden Canes pick up some wins. This week SJSU comes north to the Smurf Turf and isn’t bringing much hope with them the Spartans are only 1-5 and the only win was against a FCS school. The Broncos might need style points more than anyone and this is a week to pick some up.

#16 Utah Utes vs. Wyoming Cowboys
Field Cred-W’s against Louisville
The Utes still control their destiny in terms of the Mnt. West and might be BSU’s best hope of still making the BCS. Last week Air Force took Utah to OT before the Utes pulled it out, this week things should be easier, maybe. The Pokes have won 3 of 4 to move a game over .500 at 4-3 but don’t fare as well against the Utes being 49-31-1 all time against Utah.

#18 Houston Cougars vs. Southern Miss Eagles (beat UVA)
Field Cred-W’s @ #5 Oklahoma St., against Texas Tech, @ Mississippi St.
Houston has possibly the best case for a playoff with big wins and only one bad performance. This week USM comes to Robertson and the Eagles have been the most respected C-USA team over the past couple years. This season isn’t much different although their record is only 5-3 they have had trips to Lawrence and Louisville and lost by a combined 9 points. That should mean the Cougars wont be looking ahead and have another slip up, USM comes in with the second best offense in C-USA only behind UH, but have the number 1 defense in the conference. Big, big game this week for both squads.

NR Central Michigan @Boston College
Field Cred-W’s @Michigan State
Central has a chance to go 3-1 in non conference including wins @East Lansing and @Chestnut Hill with the only blemish being a touchdown loss @Tucson, that’s a schedule. That might be putting the cart before the horse the Eagles are coming off a coulda, shoulda, woulda loss @South Bend and are 5-3 but haven’t beat a team with a winning record. This is the game of the weekend for non AQ schools and CMU has a chance to put themselves in the conversation for schools really getting ripped off. Looking past this weekend I’m not playing so I will chances are that the system is going to keep Central out of any meaningful bowl game. That means CMU will be headed to the Little C’s bowl and their likely opponent… Michigan and barring an epic MAC upset Central will have a chance to beat every D1 school in the state.

Weekend Wrap-Up
The game of the week looked very similar to last years meeting TCU 38 BYU 7, last season TCU 32 BYU 7 difference this time round BCS dreams and outside title game chances increased not disappeared. The Frogs made the jump over fellow unbeatens Cincinnati and Boise State. Now on the outside chance of the title game of course it all starts with the Frogs winning out, then moves to teams losing which isn’t all that far fetched given recent performances. FLA loses to UGA, or Alabama. Alabama loses to LSU or Auburn. Texas loses this weekend to OK St.
Iowa loses to Ohio St, and USC loses to Oregon or Stanford.

That would give all teams ahead of the Frogs at least one loss and leave TCU undefeated with wins @UVA, @Clemson(who just beat Miami) @BYU, and against Utah. Fellow lone star represent Texas has the least likely chance of losing given they only have to play OSU minus their best player Dez Bryant. But that’s ok because there are two spots for the title game.

The bigger issue is how UT got anointed best of the rest, the rest being a team outside the SEC. The Horns have a non conference schedule that does not include a school from a BCS conference, UL-Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, and UCF. Argument for this is the Big 12 is so strong “not so fast my friend” their conference schedule contains only two ranked teams, and they both will face Texas minus their best players Sam Bradford, and the for mentioned Dez Bryant.

This has become the argument in this system comparing schedules. Let’s do so; take TCU, Iowa and Cincinnati and their schedules include Virginia, Clemson, Arizona, and Oregon St., Illinois. Compare that to schedules of Florida and Texas which include only one BCS school Florida State. For UT see above, for FLA besides FSU there’s Charleston Southern, Troy and Florida International sounds like a national championship schedule to me, if your Richmond.

#7 Boise State traveled to the islands and beat down the Warriors with the style points they are suppose to be showing 54-9, reward? Falling three spots in the new rankings. The Broncos are 29-4 the last three seasons and are suppose ably relying on Oregon to win out, to salvage anything form their season. So much for that whole controlling your own destiny thing.

#6 TCU as mentioned above, took it to the Cougars again. This gives the Frogs their 4th road victory already this season as many road games as the vaunted Gators play all season by the way. The win moves TCU into the top spot for non AQ schools a spot they should occupy through the season unless they trip up, and defending conference champ Utah comes calling Nov 14.

#18 Houston won with their own style points beating SMU 38-15 and the Ponies got 12 of those 15 in mop up time. The Cougars now enter the meat of the C-USA schedule with USM, @Tulsa, and @UCF the next three weeks. UH still has an outside chance of cracking the BCS, if they finish in the top 16 of the final standings and ahead of a BCS conference champ they have a chance of getting a much deserved pay day. The best case scenario here for the Coug’s is that the Big East contenders beat up on each other, and this is very possible given Tony Pike’s re-broken arm and Pitt is finally playing up to its potential and WVU is always a contender.

#16 Utah had their struggles continue against the Academy being forced to OT at home before stopping the triple option on 4th down and coming out with a 23-16 victory. Many outsiders look at this as a bad win (great term) beating a team with a .500 record at home well ask Minnesota and TCU about playing the Flacons both teams won by a combined 10 points. The Ute’s continue their home stand against Wyoming look for a more impressive outing on Saturday.

NR Central Michigan, still not ranked for some reason. The Chips went to Bowling Green and didn’t leave with the half hundred on the board like BSU did. However a very nice second half defensive performance gave CMU an easy 24-10 road win. On Saturday Central plays outta conference on the road against BC from the ACC and gives the MAC and non AQ schools yet another chance to beat big brother.

Falling from the rankings BYU, for some odd reason. I guess Oklahoma’s weakness hurts the Y and is a non issue for the Longhorns. The Cougars inability to deal with great team speed was once again exposed as they just couldn’t block Jerry Hughes and couldn’t cover any receiver. Unfortunately the Cougars are left with very little to play for this season outside of the Beehive Boot, and that’s a shame considering where this season started.

Thanks for playing Idaho. Yes Reno is a tough place to play and yes you are Idaho but at least show up please. We will all look for the Vandals in the news again when no one else will hire Dennis Erickson.

Weekend Watch

#4 Boise State Broncos
Field Cred- W’s against #16 Oregon @ Fresno, @ Tulsa
This week @ Hawaii
The Broncos take the flight to the island to play the Warriors who are having a down season in year two post June Jones. Don’t take the Warriors lightly playing at home and the flight from Boise not your normal roady. The question for the Broncos is do they have to win with style points to stay at 4 or to move up?

#8 TCU Horned Frogs
Field Cred-W’s @UVA, @Clemson, against CSU (beat CU)
This week @ #9 BYU (beat #3 Oklahoma and CSU)
The Frogs and Cougars meet in this weekend’s biggest match-up shinning some much earned light on the non AQ schools and the Mnt West. The Frogs embarrassed the Cougars last season knocking them from the ranks of the unbeaten and BCS consideration. Now that the rolls are completely flipped the question is will the Cougars be able to handle the Frogs speed?

#16 BYU Cougars
Field Cred-W’s against Oklahoma, CSU
This week vs. #8 TCU (beat Clemson, UVA, and CSU)
The Coug’s have revenge on their minds. Not only for the beat-down received last year in Ft Worth but the embarrassment handed out by FSU earlier this season at the Mountain. BYU wants to prove that they can play with and beat teams built on good/great speed which has always been the knock. With some help BYU still has a chance to avoid a third straight trip to Vegas in Dec. but a second straight loss to the Frogs ends those chances.

#17 Houston Cougars
Field Cred-W’s @ # 5 Okie St, against Texas Tech now ranked, @ Miss. St
This Week against SMU
The other Coug’s welcome in the Ponies from up state and aren’t to be taken lightly just ask TCU. June Jones has a team with some bad losses however is 2-0 in conference and always plays hard and could catch the Cats looking ahead with games against USM, Tulsa, and UCF traditional conference powers coming up the next three weeks. Don’t fall asleep again UH!!!

#18 Utah Utes
Field Cred- W’s against Louisville, @CSU
This week against Air Force
Utah continues to play even more under the radar if possible and start a stretch of three straight home games against very beatable opponents UW and UNM to follow. However the Falcons tend to have the Utes number being the only MWC team with a winning record against Utah 14-11. And just like there I-15 brother they still have an outside chance of cracking the BCS, but all starts with winning out.

NR Central Michigan Chippewa’s
Field Cred-W’s @ #23 Michigan St.
This Week @ Bowling Green
Central is now in the driver seat to win the MAC for the second time in three years and travels to take on a Bowling Green squad with a sub par record but who has played a brutal schedule. This becomes a comparison game, BSU traveled cross country and hung near half a hundred on the Falcons, so again winning with style become almost as important as winning itself. P.S. CMU’s one loss on the road at Tucson, AZ now looks even better as the Cats moved into the top 25.

** Looking to make their way onto the watch list**
Idaho Vandals
Record 6-1
Field Cred W’s @ Northern Illinois (beat Purdue (beat Ohio State)) beat CSU
This week @ Nevada
The Vandals are historically one of the worst FBS programs but this year have found what it takes to come away with some much needed W’s. They only played one AQ school and lost but, have games upcoming with conference powers Fresno and national power Boise so the Vandals could still be heard from.

Saturday Wrap
All “mid major” teams on the watch list came away with victories and none were really that close with only Boise State winning by less than 10. On Sunday the first BS rankings came out with BSU ranked #4 joined by fellow unbeaten TCU at #9. BYU, Houston and Utah fall in line at 16, 17, 18, with the Chips still getting no love remaining unranked.

I would like to step away from the mid major soap box for a second and point out some other BS problems. The BCS is based on 6 “power” conferences and the champions of each getting an automatic bid. Problem being #5Cincinnati and #6 Iowa are now being talked about that if they go undefeated will they be able to beat out one loss teams. Are you freaking kidding me right now so not only will the BS computers and polls tell Mnt. West, WAC and CUSA teams they can’t win a championship now there saying they will tell Big East and Big 11 teams that they aren’t good enough either. So instead of having D-1 and D1-aa, sorry I mean FBS and FCS divisions of college football should we just have D-elite college football involving SEC, Big 12 teams USC and Norte Dame, everyone else would just be regular old D-1, well least they would have a playoff system then.

Just a little more BCS rankings breakdown. Teams in the top 20 by conference SEC-3, Big 12-2 and one of them was beat by Houston at home, Pac-10-2, Big 11-3 Mountain West-3. I’m not saying I’m just saying. Now to the wrap.

#4 Boise State had probably the toughest game on the road at Tulsa and came away with an “unimpressive” win. Which for them means there season in slipping away. A field goal with .00 seconds left to beat Arkansas at home keeps Florida #1. Schedule, schedule, schedule everyone wants to yell I’m sorry Charleston Southern, Troy, and Vandy.

#9 TCU played only there second home game of the season and as “sub-par” as they played last week in the snow they played that well at home against Colorado St (beat CU). Big week for the Frogs as they again prep for another road game this time against conference foe BYU, and the Y is looking for pay back for last seasons beat down in Ft. Worth that took the Cougs outta the BCS.

#16 Brigham Young was on the road for the second straight week this time in San Diego to play the Aztecs and the game wasn’t as ugly as it could be with the Y winning only 38-28. Now the second act starts for the Cougars as they welcome TCU to the mountain on Saturday night. And with a win over Utah in the season finally BYU will be able to claim one of the more impressive season in college football, which for them will more than likely mean a return to Vegas for a before Christmas bowl game.

#17 Houston went to the bayou and beat down the Green Wave just like they were suppose to. After a home game against SMU don’t fall asleep again cougars, the Cougs have a home game with Southern Miss, and two road games against Tulsa and Central Florida. So again it can not be understated how bad Houston is getting jobbed this season, if they run the table.

#18 Utah also played their second straight road game and didn’t let the distractions of Vegas get to them as they took it to the Rebels 35-15. Utah plays three straight home games starting this week against the Academy followed by the Pokes and Lobos which should leave the Ute’s with only one loss heading into their last three games two of which are against TCU and BYU both on the road.

NR Central Michigan went west to play Western Michigan and never really gave the Broncos a chance going into Waldo and coming out with a 34-23 victory. The Chips are the only team on the watch list not ranked which is more than a little mind boggling, specially now with Sparty picking it up and Zona moving into the top 25. In two weeks Central gets another chance to take on “big brother” with a trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass

Weekly Look

Temas to watch this week/weekend

#5 Boise State Broncos
Record 6-0
Credentials Wins vs #16 Oregon, @ Fresno St., @ Tulsa
This week @ Tulsa, BSU 28 UT 21

Boise has become the highest ranked non BCS school during the regular season. And is now facing the haters head on with Nevada and Hawaii having down years BSU is left with a soft schudule. Which doesnt seem to be the same issue for Florida now having beatin LSU the Gators are left with a sub par SEC east with down teams in UGA and UT and natural powers UK, and Vandy. And a schudule missing Ole Miss, Auburn or a regular season game with Alabama. Florida however didnt go out and play a ranked non confrence team or a road non confrence game.

#12 TCU Horned Frogs
Record 5-0
Credentials Wins @UVA, @ Clemson
This Week vs Colorado St who beat Colorado week one @ Boulder
The frogs enter the meat of the MWC schudule coming off a road win against the Air Force academy. Haters would say that the frogs exscaped with only a 3-point win against a middle of the pack team, problem being the weather 20's and snow and an offesnive style that is very difficult, see Ohio St vs Navy week one diffrence the Luckeyes were playing at home.

#18 Brigham Young Cougars
Record 5-1
Credentials Wins vs#3 Oklahoma "nuetral", Colorado St.
This Week @ San Diego St
The Y boosts the biggest win for a non BCS school this season in Arlington, TX against the Sooners. However the Cougars would get taken to the woodshed @ home against Florida St. However after the Sooners lost they still were in the national championship hunt, but one loss puts the Cougars in the Liberty Bowl not the title game. If the Cougars would win out they would have victories against OU, TCU, and Utah. Somebody explain to me how that equals the Las Vegas Bowl.

#23 Houston Cougars
Record 4-1
Credentials Wins @ #5 Oklahoma St., against Texas Tech, @ Mississippi St.
This Week @Tulane
These Cougars have the second biggest win for a non BCS school along with a win at Starkville, MS where it took a goal line stand by LSU to come out with a victory. Yes the Cougars should have beaten the Miners in El Paso however here comes the one loss rule again one bad night and there season is destended for the Liberty Bowl not the Rose Bowl like one bad afternoon USC the Torjans lose to a team who was 0-12 last season and there headed cross town for the Rose Bowl, at the least.

#24 Utah Utes
Record 4-1
Credentials Wins against Louisville, @ Colorado St
This Week @UNLV
The Utes have played a softer schudule this season after there undefeated 08 season and a Sugar Bowl beat down of Bama. However still claim a win over a Big East team and the MWC championship still goes through SLC. Utah did blow there chance at returning to the BCS again becasue of the one loss rule with there slow preformance @ Eugene

NR Central Michigan Chippewas
Record 5-1
Credentials Win @ #23 Michigan State
This Week @ Western Michigan
The Chips staretd the season with offense off night in the dessert against the Arizona Wildcats however came away with a respectable one loss 19-6. The next week they again played a road BCS game against the Spartans and pulled off one of the most exciting victories this season. Central still has a ACC date with Boston College again on the road.

Intro

This blog is to help shed light on "mid major"college football and show how they belong in the debacle of a system that is the BCS. One question that must be asked is, if the powers that be feel these schools are so infearer why are they afraid to let them in on the party and the money. Well through a little history and the present going on's i hope to show that they do belong and that the powers should be afraid, however they are still wrong for acting out on thier fear.
First the history leason, aside from the national examples of Bosie State and Utah(twice) ill take some time to point out less noted victories. There are two confernces that will be focused on. the Mountian West and the WAC which have both had school crash the "BS" party. And also will take some time to look at schools with less acclaimed victories.
The Mountain West. In 2008 went 6-2 against the Pac-10 including bottom half teams New Mexico and UNLV with wins over bowl bound teams Arizona and Arizona St. Also Wyoming a yearly cellar dweller went to Knoxville and beat the Vols, as well as Utah's beat down of Bama, and Michigan niether played in Salt Lake.
The WAC has a little less history and yes has more weak teams, however has had two different teams in the "BS" Hawaii and Boise St. Then there is Fresno St. which has gone about trying to prove itself the hardest way possible by playing any team anywhere which just almosty always happens to be on the road, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, UCLA, USC, and Illinois just to name a few.
Then there are teams who come on the sence and are given no chance, Houston, Ball St., Tulsa. Houston has taken the Fresno plan of playing anyone anywhere and just this season alone have victories at Oklahoma St who was #5, at Mississippi St, and against Texas Tech, however with one bad game that is allowed all the "big schools" is now left to play for the GMAC bowl rather than the BCS championship game or Fiesta Bowl and the millions of extra dollars that come with those games
