Weekend Wrap-Up
The story of the weekend was everyone taking care of business, sometimes not so pretty i.e. Alabama, Texas but in the end they came away with W's and helped put in some of the final nails in the Horned Frogs coffin. Florida looked the part of a number one, even if they were playing a sub par Noles team missing their best player. Well with one week left in the college football regular season TCU is down to it's last shot, needing Nebraska (9-3) to pull the huge upset on Texas like the Horns pulled on them in the inaugural Big 12 title game in '96 keeping the Huskers out of the national championship. With a UT loss it would come down to a classic debate between TCU and Cincinnati honestly their is no right answer. Both squads played good non conference schedules both played in good top heavy conferences there is no real way to pick who would play the SEC champ. WE NEED A PLAYOFF, PLEASE.

#4 TCU 51 UNM 10
Was there every any question about this one? New Mexico picked up their win for this season last week and honestly probably would have lost more by beating the Frogs. The game couldn't have started any worse for the Lobos a safety on their first offensive possession was just a preview of what was to come 30 unanswered points to start and for all intensive purposes end the game by the home Frogs. Andy Dalton is not so quietly setting himself up for a Heisman run next season the Frogs QB added 228 yards and four TD's to his '09 totals giving him 2,448 yards and 22 TD's for the season with only four interceptions along with 522 yards rushing and three more TD's. Antonie Hicks had a career day highlighted by his two TD catches in a 20 second span. The Frogs finished the season undefeated for the first time in 71 years and 12-0 for the first time ever, giving the Mountain West an undefeated and top five ranked team for the second straight season. Now all TCU can do is sit and wait, great system.
#6 Boise State 44 Nevada 33
The Bronco's jumped out early and survived key injures to hold on for the W. It was 20-0 before the Wolfpack got on the board, and by then the Bronco's had lost their top WR Austin Pettis and were on the verge of losing RB Jeremy Avery. Nevada made a run in the second and third quarters at one point getting within one score, but Kellen Moore was Kellen Moore and found little brother Kerby for the game icing TD with just over five minutes left, Nevada added a garbage time TD to make it closer but the Bronco's came away with their third conference title in four years. Kellen Moore threw for only 262 in the rain/snow but added five TD's bringing his season total to 38 with only three interceptions, let me restate that 38 Touchdowns and 3 interceptions just crazy numbers and he is only a sophomore. Critics will be critics but in sports their is only one thing that matters Winning and BSU is 72-4 this decade, and is looking more and more likely to make a second Fiesta Bowl appearance.
#14 BYU 26 #21 Utah 23 in OT
The Cougars were almost forgotten about after their wood shedding at the hands of TCU but have rebounded for their thrid straight 10 win season, it wasn't easy the Holy War never is. Max Hall was making it look easy through three quarters though as he lead the home team to 20 straight points spanning the second and third quarter. The Y looked as if they were going to cruise heading into the fourth with a 20-6 lead against a team who hadn't scored since the first. The Utes made their comeback forcing OT and even scoring first in the extra session but only kicked a FG, leaving the door open for the senior Hall to hit fellow senior TE Andrew George for a 25 yard game winning TD pass. Hall had a sub-par day only throwing for 134 but came up big in crunch time, Hall finishes the season with very impressive totals 3,368 yards passing and 30 TD's.
As easy as BYU had it in the second and third the Utes had it that easy in the first and fourth problem being they only came away with FG's in the opening period and were so far behind in the closing period. Even one TD in the first and this might have been a different game. The Utes really shot themselves in the foot with penalties 12 for 113 yards and the games only turnover to go along with missing out on touchdowns. Super frosh Jordan Wynn played well again in his second hostel road game and his first Holy War and gives Utah a known QB heading into next season which coming into this season was the biggest question mark for the Utes. Junior RB Eddie Wide added 114 yards and one TD on the ground giving him 1,032 and 12 for the season. Utah is young and looks to be even better next season.
#24 Houston 73 Rice 14
The battle for the Bayou Bucket well....wasn't much of a battle. In a weekend of unanswered scoring streaks UH takes the cake scoring 66 straight before the Owl's got their first, safe to say it was already over by then. QB Case Keenum threw for 323 and two TD's in only three quarters, Tyron Carrier scored the first of his two TD's on the opening kickoff returning it 99 yards for the score and the rout was on. Junior Case Keenum put up just outstanding numbers this season throwing for 4,922 yards and 38 TD's while only giving it to the other team six times in almost 600 attempts. Yes College football is still controlled by the Texas', Florida's, and Oklahoma's, but I see your McCoy, Tebow and Bradford and raise you Moore, Dalton and Keenum for Heisman next season.

Weekend Preview
This weekend shapes up as a built in bye week for top contenders Florida steps out of conference for another challengeing opponent Florida International and all three of their Sun Belt Conference wins. Alabama does the Gators one better by playing a FCS school Chattanooga and there is no TO on this Mocs team. Texas has the toughest game and that's at home against a Kansas team who has lost five straight and now is saying their coach is too tough on them, did they ever think that the tough love might have helped them in their brawl against the top ranked hoops team? And number 5 Cincinnati has a literal bye, so the chance of TCU and Boise State getting any help this week are slim to none and slim is on its way out the door.

The Frogs play what amounts to a bye week as well, the toughest part of playing the Pokes lately is making the trip to Laramie. Lets start with some good news for the home squad, last time the Frogs made the trip they went home with a L, Wyoming went to Knoxville this time last year and came home with a W, and this season only trailed Texas 13-10 at half before letting things get away so the Pokes wont be intimidated. Bad news starts with TCU being the only FBS school ranked in the top 15 in both total defense and offense the Frogs are ranked fourth in both, BYU a team TCU already beat down this season took it to UW 52-0 in their last home game. TCU has a chance win the Mountain West for the first time since'05 and is a mear 32 point favorite TCU takes about half the first quarter to get over the trip and then pours it on the Cowboys winning big.

The Broncos come in rolling of last weeks Spud State beat down of Idaho looking to do the same to USU and baring some cosmic miracle will do. Kellen Moore has replaced Case Keenum as the dark horse Heisman candidate and according to Pat Forde of ESPN isn't a dark horse he is actually the leader on his list. Moore brings his 2558 passing yards 32 TD's and only 3 int's to Logan and that doesn't sit well for the Aggies as they have given up over 30 seven times already this year and none of those offense's are as prolific as Boise's. The Broncos are a 24 point road favorite and USU should consider it a victory if they can keep it that close, not a long trip Broncos start quick and cruise to an easy W.

The Tigers are playing for fired head coach Tommy West and should come out with extra effort, but Houston can still throw it around the yard and should win by at least the 24 their favored by.

Weekend Wrap Up
In a weekend of marquee match ups, they were marquee beat downs. Headlined by the Cardinal returning to the Coliseum and handing the Trojans there worst loss since ’85 and the biggest home beat down since ’66, 55-21. Alabama was thought to have a road test against Miss. St. not so much the tide rolled 31-3, GA Tech reminded Duke that yes your their still Duke 49-10.
But with out a doubt the biggest and maybe most surprising beat down took place in Ft. Worth with the Frogs just taking it to the Utes 55-28, and it wasn’t really even that close. In their final regular season test TCU passed with flying colors, Utah had won 22 of its last 23 and was outta the game before halftime. Now all the Frogs can do is sit and wait, they have done all they can do, won all their games, won on the road UVA, Clemson, and BYU and won with style points BYU and Utah. All that is left is to keep winning and wait and see if the corrupt system will let them play for the National Championship.

As stated in the open this was a beat down, it really opened up when the Frogs scored three TD’s in a 2 ½ minute stretch in the second quarter. Overall the Frogs offense put up 55 on a team who had only given up more than 20 once this season, and 549 yards total offense, maybe the stat of the game TCU ran for 349 yards Utah had 284 total yards. Utah coach Kyle Wittingham said “this is the best team I have faced” now this might be coach speak and maybe be jaded to help his team feel better and his conference look better, but that statement includes some very good teams…ie Alabama.
Utah walked into a snake pit Saturday night the largest crowd ever at Amon Carter Stadium, College Gameday, and the new blood squirting TCU uni’s. Utah just couldn’t block the Frogs front four mainly Jerry Hughes the TCU pass rush and defensive pressure just controlled the game. Some good news for the Utes, Super Frosh Jordan Wynn looked un phased by the situation only making one real mistake throwing a pic six, that really didn’t matter that much being that Utah was already outta the game.

So the game didn’t live up to the hype, what a shock I know. The Vandals proved in prior weeks that they weren’t up to the BSU level, but they had proved they weren’t your older brothers Vandals and playing against in state rival Boise it was thought that they would show up and provide a challenge. The game was over in the first quarter with the Vandals fumbling on their first possession and punting on their second falling behind 14-0 and it was over from there. Another hoe hum day for Kellen Moore 299 yards passing only 5 TD’s and of course no int’s Jeremy Avery added 110 and a score on the ground. The defense that had taken a hit last weekend against LA Tech didn’t fair much better this week giving up over 500 yards total offense, but did force 7 turnovers and scored a TD of their own.

Can’t say I didn’t call it last week, the Small School Saturday’s favorite team had a complete letdown encompassing the second and third quarters. Case Keenum did throw for 377 and three TD’s but did throw a drive killing int, wasn’t all on him however. The defense was, well the defense getting pounded on the ground leading to big plays down field in the Knights passing game. After back to back thrilling come from behind victories the Cougars just couldn’t pull it out again, they tried scoring twice in the last four minutes to get within five, an interesting non challenge by head coach Kevin Sumlin early in the fourth did cost UH a TD and possibly the game. In the big picture of this season this loss hurts but unfortunately the Cougars weren’t going to get to play for anything big time anyway, now the focus turns to winning the west division of C-USA and maybe getting a rematch with UCF.

Weekend Preview
After two slow weeks in terms of match ups this week is chalked full of great games and is the perfect day to kick back and watch some ball. Some of the headline games include Stanford back at SC for the first time since pulling one of the biggest upsets in history, GA Tech and Duke yes I said Duke this game was a lot better before the Dukies lost to the Heels, Norte Dame at Pitt the Panthers might be the least talked about one loss team and the Domers are coming off another home loss to Navy. There are3 games involving top 25 teams Cincinnati and West Virginia Friday night the Bearcats start their murders row home stretch against the always talented Mountaineers, in what could be the most boring game on TV this season Iowa fresh off watching their title hopes and QB go down in the same game travel to Columbus to play for the Rose Bowl. Then there is the game of the week and again takes place in the Mountain West, #16 Utah travels to Ft. Worth to play #4 TCU in a rematch of one of last season’s best games won by Utah on a TD pass in the final minute, after TCU missed three second half field goals. And the rematch could be the difference between millions and thousands and possibly Pasadena or Memphis, for the Frogs.

The Frogs have rewritten history they made just a few weeks ago by moving up to #4 in the BS standings making them the new highest ranked non AQ School. First for the home squad and these stats are outstanding and have been triple checked. The offense has more than stepped up this season scoring 20 or more on 8 of their 9 games and are averaging 458 total yards a game, the defense which has been the Frogs calling card, oh its doing more than its fair share ranked third in the nation in total defense and get this have allowed 25 total points in their last four games. TCU has won 6 straight by at least 16 and their last 4 by an average of 38.
Utah is starting freshman QB Jordan Wynn making his first career road start at Amon Carter Stadium isn’t an easy place to do so and the fore mentioned defensive stats don’t make life any easier. The Utes offense is averaging 411 yards a game and has been much more explosive since the super frosh started taking the snaps. The Utah defense has held six straight opponents under 20 points and is giving up just 299 yards a game.
The spread for this game is almost as crazy as some of the Frogs stats. TCU is a 20 point favorite and should win the game and probably pretty easily but by 20? the Utes have to much pride, talent and speed for that. A win puts TCU in the BCS baring a mind blowing upset.

To paraphrase my man Pat Forde you know you have waited for this the Spud State Super Bowl, and if you miss it you’ll hate yourself. The Vandals have become…well not relevant but isn’t one of the worse teams in the country making this game relevant. The Broncos are back at home where they have won 53 straight regular season games including every game played against the Vandals since they both joined the FBS. More than likely this will turn into a shoot out both teams average over 430 total yards per game. Boise is averaging 41 points a game and over 45 a game in WAC games. Idaho has lost 2 of 3 after winning 5 straight, and come into this game as a 31 point dog. The Vandals will score some points but more than likely get taken to the Bronco Woodshed.

UH is only a 5 point favorite but should win much easier than that.

Weekend Wrap Up
The biggest loss of this past Saturday was Iowa going down at home against Northwestern. This loss besides knocking the Hawkeyes out of the championship picture moved the Horned Frogs into fourth in the BS standings. The Frogs beat down of SDSU leaves them undefeated heading into their biggest remaining match up of the season and with a W gives TCU a legit chance of playing for it all, with some help of course. The needed is two of the top three losing not that far fetched.
#1 Florida has three regular season games left take out FIU everyone else has, other than the Panthers the Gators have a road game this weekend @Columbia against their former head ball coach. The Gamecocks have had a very sub par season, but do have the talent and speed and coaching to pull the upset especially playing at home. Same ol same ol here for Florida St. the Gators final opponent this season at the Swamp, the Noles have more speed and more talent than USC and has under achieved even more and now Star QB Christen Ponder is out for the season. But this is a rivalry game and could possibly be Bobby Bowden’s last game as head coach so the Noles could have some extra inspiration.
#2 Alabama also has three games left before the SEC title game. And two of those are on the road against very competitive team’s @Starkville and @Auburn. The Bulldogs have played way over their heads this season and have almost pulled home upsets over LSU and Florida so the Dogs coming away with a victory after the Tide coming down from beating LSU is possible. The other Tigers have the speed and athletes that they have always had but first year coach Gene Chizck has flipped the script the Tigers have the top offense in the conference but are near the bottom in defense. A signature win in another rivalry game could take down the Tide.
#3 Texas has three conference games left two on the road. But there is little to no chance for an upset here, Baylor stinks and I don’t think has ever beat UT, Kansas has totally face planted, best chance an up and coming A&M squad with an athletic QB, and the Aggies pulled the upset two years ago in College Station.
*** All three teams play on championship games and the best scenario is that Alabama losses one of its two road games and then beats UF in Atlanta, giving the two SEC team’s losses and leaving UT and TCU as the top candidates for the title game. Weekend Wrap.
#4 TCU 55 SDSU 12
This game was never in doubt the Frogs came out and took it to the Aztecs just like they were suppose to. There was no looking ahead to the Utes and then having to pull it out in the second half. Andy Dalton made sure of that with 239 yards passing and two TD’s passing and rushing, speaking of rushing they did that too for a total of 312. Just total domination only allowing 220 total yards and gaining 551 of their own. TCU has extended their winning streak to 11 and now has the biggest game of the weekend coming up at home against Utah, a win basically assures them a conference title and keeps them in the hunt.
#6 Boise State 45 LA Tech 35
It looked like the long roady had no ill effect on the Broncos as they jumped out early and lead by 27 at halftime, but the Bulldogs made some great halftime adjustments and closed the gap to only two before BSU took back control and the W. The Broncos gave up a season high 35 points but only 250 total yards LA Tech took advantage of an ill advised Kellen Moore pass and an onside kick to come away with quick points. The Bronco offense had no problems putting up 507 total yards 194 of those came on the ground from Jeremy Avery who added a TD of his own. The win gave BSU there fourth 9-0 start in six seasons and have won 22 of their last 23 WAC games with the only loss coming @Hawaii in 07 when the Rainbows went unbeaten.
#15 Houston 46 Tulsa 45
For the second straight week the Cougars played the most exciting game of the weekend, and again came out with a W. The offense numbers are even hard to imagine on X-Box Case Keenum had 522 more yards passing and three TD’s the offense in total put up 695. The problem for UH is that their defense needs to step up and keep teams from putting up 40 plus. Mid major counter parts TCU and Boise have both taken great strides and have done so with consistent defense. If the Cougars want to keep the national profile they need to keep focus on both sides of the ball.
#16 Utah 45 UNM 14
The Utes didn’t come out and blow the doors off the Lobos, in fact they gave up 200 yards of offense in the first half and only lead by 10. Second half different story as freshman QB Jordan Wynn making his first start lead the Utes to 28 unanswered and cruised to a victory over still winless UNM. Problems did arise however as the Utes gave up 334 yards to a struggling offense and turned the ball over twice. Wynn did throw for 297 and 2 TD’s in his only warm up start before traveling to Ft. Worth.
The biggest loss of this past Saturday was Iowa going down at home against Northwestern. This loss besides knocking the Hawkeyes out of the championship picture moved the Horned Frogs into fourth in the BS standings. Weekend Preview
Second straight pedestrian weekend for college ball in general and the mid majors are no exception. The biggest game for the non AQ weekend isn’t even on Sat. it’s the Friday night showcase on ESPN2 between the home dogs, literally Louisiana Tech and the Boise State Broncos, more on that game to come. Biggest storyline of the weekend has to be can these teams come away with what should be easy wins and then rack up the style points that they all supposedly need to stay where they are. The hidden story is can TCU and Utah avoid looking ahead to next weekends showdown.
A couple schools step outta conference this week to take on BS conference schools, starting Thursday night in another primetime showcase VA Tech travels yes travels to East Carolina looking to avenge last season’s home opening loss to the Pirates. The Hookies are not playing up to expectations and the Pirates are always a competitive and the speed to play with an ACC school who they know they can beat. Second game is Texas v. UCF the Knights took the 07 match up till the final minutes losing by only a field goal, and again the Knights have the speed to play with UT so it may not be the woodsheding that it comes off as.
#6 TCU @ San Diego State
TCU Field Cred W’s @UVA, @Clemson, @BYU
The Frogs take the rare two time zone trip to play the Aztecs so don’t be surprised by a slow start. However that’s probably as close as it will be. TCU hasn’t played a game decided by less than 30 since beating AFA by three. TCU has outscored its opponents by almost 200 points 282-89, that includes two road wins against the ACC and against offensive power BYU, and in the last three including the Y its handed out beat downs by a 123-13 count. As for this week TCU has to avoid over looking the Aztecs and the trip and looking to next weeks MWC showdown. TCU hasn’t lost to SDSU since joining the MWC for the Tec’s they have won three of four but had to squeak out a home win against winless New Mexico who has packed a punch lately (that was my attempt at a bad Mikes Locksley joke). For Super Frog they have to continue racking up the style points to please their east coast voters. Look for the Frogs to start slow and then blow out the Aztecs.
#7 Boise State @ Louisiana Tech

The Broncos take their second extremely long road trip in the last three weeks, how has it affected them? Back to back 40 plus victories is how. Since their close call at Tulsa the Broncos have pilled on those much needed style points against sub par opponents and will need to do so again being on national TV for the first time since. The sub plot for this match-up is two fold, one BSU can’t be looking to next weeks Spud State Super Bowl, and two the reason why is yes the Dogs are only 1-8 vs. the Broncos but always play BSU close at home and have won 11 of 12 at home. Harping on the style points, QB Kellen Moore is second in FBS in passing yards per game and the Bronco D is ranked 10th nationally and is the main reason BSU has become a legit national power. Again similar to TCU the Broncos will probably start slow then poor it on in the second half.
#14 Utah against New Mexico
Utah Field Cred W against Louisville, (only loss @Eugene)
The Utes have cupcake city this week at home against winless New Mexico and need to take full advantage. A month full of close calls leaves the Utes needing a big win against a bad team. One would look at the debacle that has become the Lobo program and say this is it, but last seasons 10-7 Utah victory says it may be a little closer, maybe. The bigger question for Utah is at the QB position junior Terrence Cain had controlled the spot until last week when super frosh Jordan Wynn came in after halftime and led the Utes to 19 unanswered and if Kyle Whittingham wants to make the switch this is the week to get the youngster some pt, because next week is @Ft. Worth in the conference game of the year part II. There’s no slow starts here the Utes should take it to the Lobos from the start.

The Cougars have to show how they deal with success coming off their last big win they promptly went to El Paso and watched their season disappear. Now they travel to Tulsa and the Hurricanes are a proud program looking to right their season and a home win against a top 15 team will do just that. This lines up to be another mid major comparison game, how will the Coug’s fair compared to the Broncos who snuck out of the Sooner state with only a touchdown victory. Case Keenum leads the nation in passing with 422 yards per game not good news for the Golden Canes who gave up over 350 to pass happy SMU last week. Tulsa plays extremely well at home and Houston has struggled in Tulsa 6-9 all time, the game should be the closest of the weekend match ups but look for the Cougars to win by at least double digits they have too much at stake in dark horse BCS dreams and Case Keenums outside Heisman chances.
